Desperate, poor and struggling to keep the lights on, Wanda and Al live in an un-air conditioned trailer in Louisiana and are expecting a fifth child. Rachel and Richard, a well-off California couple, have everything except a baby of their own. A classified ad brings the couples together as the Californians are willing to help with expenses in exchange for adopting Wanda’s baby. Both parties do their best to make the arrangement work, but the class differences create unbearable tensions.
