We are thrilled to announce our 2019 season which will be helmed by a slate of all-female directors.
Stephen Sondheim’s Tony Award-winning A Little Night Music opens the season January 24. Set in Sweden at the turn of the century, the musical centers around Fredrick Egerman and his past lover Desiree Armfeldt who reconnect amid failing relationships. With a book by Hugh Wheeler, A Little Night Music weaves Egerman and Armfeldt’s affair between various trysts and liaisons of their families and servants during a weekend in the Swedish countryside.
Directed by Henry Award-winner Kelly Van Oosbree, the musical will be reimagined for CCT’s intimate Pluss Theatre at the Mizel Arts and Culture Center. Traci Kern returns to CCT as music director.
“I am always up for a challenge and am drawn to creative storytelling,” Van Oosbree says. “I believe the opportunity to tell this story in a way that accommodates the space is going to create some thrilling staging and a wonderful theatrical experience.”
Following Night Music, our spring production, Other Desert Cities, runs March 28 through April 28. Award-winning playwright Jon Robin Baitz’s family drama centers around Brooke Wyeth, who is still struggling to move on from a decades-old family trauma, but her soon-to-be-published memoir offers hope of finding closure. During a visit to her parents’ home in Palm Springs, Wyeth reveals her new memoir exposes a dark family secret — but her parents are not ready to dig up the past.
Actor and director Sheila Ivy Traister, who received acclaim for her direction of Arabian Nights at the Aurora Fox, directs Other Desert Cities.
The season closes in the fall with Tuesdays with Morrie, directed by Henry Award-winning actor and director Billie McBride. When Morrie Schwartz is diagnosed with Lou Gehrig’s Disease, or ALS, Mitch makes time in his busy schedule to visit Schwartz every week for a few last lessons from the retired professor on life, love, and what it means to say goodbye. Based on the bestselling true story by Mitch Albom, the stage adaptation is co-authored by playwright Jeffrey Hatcher.
“We have such incredible female talent in this city,” says Artistic Producer Susie Snodgrass. “In choosing directors for the 2019 season, I felt that talent needed to be highlighted.”
